Six months in Belgium!

It all started with me taking part in a youth exchange in the summer of 2002. Immediately I felt something for these people and this great country. Those are one of the few reasons why I decided to leave Sweden and Stockholm for six months and spend it in Hoeselt, Belgium.

Before my arrival some friends arranged a family and house for me to stay at. These people waited for me at the airport and although I only met them once it felt completely normal right away. The first night I was thrown a surprise-party and got the chance to see all the guys and girls that were taking part in the exchange. Willy Hendriks built me a room and also decorated it just before I got there.

Everything was just perfect and to be honest sometimes it felt like a dream. I felt like a member of the family and that feeling still stays . The time with Hendriks is something I will never forget. We are still in contact and hopefully I can come early to visit them and the great city and people of Hoeselt.

Steve, my boss but most of all a good friend, made me feel very welcomed and working with him was a true pleasure. From day one I was introduced to all kinds of people which helped me with the language (een beetje). It also made it easier for me to create new friends. Working was fun, especially with a guy like Steve who throughout the project was keen to see that I enjoyed myself. The work itself taught me some great things, especially the small practical stuff.

On my speartime I got the opportunity to be invalved in all kinds activities such as soccer, cinema, parties and other things. I got used to the life sooner then I had ever expected. A big credit to those who supported me although I had some difficulties with the language from time to time.

So in the end, all I can say is that being a volunteer is one thing but being a volunteer in my case with the Hendriks, McJans and Hoeselt is something I wouldn't miss for the whole world. So thanks again for everything and hope I will see you all soon again.
